The Ultimate Wool Care Guide
The Ultimate Wool Care Guide
From washing to storing, everything you need to know about caring for your wool with intention.
Refreshing & Caring for Wool
Let it breathe. Wool is naturally breathable and odor-resistant, allowing it to be worn more between washes. After wearing, let your garment air out outdoors or in a well-ventilated space. Sometimes, a little fresh air is all it needs.
Treat stains with care. For small spills or marks, gently spot clean with cool water and a mild, wool-safe detergent. Addressing stains as they happen helps keep your garment fresh without unnecessary washing.
Wash gently. When washing is needed, use cool or lukewarm water (up to 30°C) and a pH-neutral detergent formulated for wool. Allow the garment to soak for 10–15 minutes, following the care label for specific instructions.
Handle with intention. Wool fibers deserve a gentle touch. Avoid scrubbing, twisting, wringing, or stretching the garment, as excessive friction and handling can cause felting, distortion, and shrinkage. Gently press the water through the fibers instead.
Dry naturally. After washing, gently press out excess water without wringing. Lay the garment flat on a clean, dry towel, reshape it, and leave it to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid hanging wet knitwear, as the weight of the water can stretch its shape.
Store with care. Make sure garments are completely dry before storing. Fold knitwear and keep it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space to help preserve its shape. For seasonal storage, use clean, breathable garment bags and protect wool from moths with natural repellents such as cedar or lavender. Avoid compressing garments for extended periods.
Machine wash only when suitable. If the care label permits, turn the garment inside out, place it in a mesh laundry bag, and select a wool or delicate cycle at 30°C or below. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and detergents that are not suitable for wool.
Care for the fiber, extend its life. With thoughtful care and less frequent washing, wool garments can maintain their natural qualities for longer. A little attention goes a long way in preserving the beauty, softness, and longevity of this remarkable natural fiber.
